Research shows that students can only sit in the same place for short periods of time. Students need movement to be able to be engaged and motivated to learn. I believe the flexible seating option will improve my student's academics and also give them more independence and comfort in our classroom community. I'm a firm believer that my classroom should be student-centered, not teacher-centered. I chose materials that will support a variety of learning styles, including those students that need to be moving constantly while working. So, they will not only be able to choose their seats, but they can bounce their feet with the stretchy desk bands, swing their legs, or stand. My students will be able to choose to do classwork by sitting on a yoga ball chair at a desk that will allow them to bounce. They will also be able to read comfortably in our Reading nook on the bungee chair. They will even have the choice to grab a yoga mat and lie down on the floor with a pillow to work. They key to flexible seating is finding a comfortable way to work in the classroom. I am confident that these materials will help my students be passionate and motivated learners in our classroom.
