My school is in one of the toughest areas in the country. The students have friends who die at the hands of gangs every year. Richmond is a very tough place to grow up. Yet, these students are some of the sweetest people on the planet. My students are mostly Latino and African-American. Most speak Spanish and English--with Spanish spoken at home and English at school. They are extremely hard working--most have a job after school. However, they are shy about their lack of knowledge of what is known as "Academic language". This makes school very challenging--they are confused very often I need to back up everything I say with a picture and have them draw everything. Every single student has their own set of challenges and it is daunting to teach them(I have 160 students) The school does not fund technology for the classroom. I just started this year and some teachers have gotten what they need, but not me. I need technological support. So do these students and they will succeed.
