My students were born from an immigrant family, or they were born in a South American country. They rely on the free and reduced lunch offered by my school for breakfast and lunch. They are experiencing a male teacher for the first time in their life, and they are excited to reach their academic potential; however, language, resources, and parental support have limited their ability to reach a fourth grade reading level. Only 15% of my students are reading at a fourth grade level. They have not been exposed to enough literacy thus far, but I am beginning to encourage the impact that reading will have in their lives. Some of my fourth grades have not read a chapter book, and I am determined to have each of my students read a chapter book this school year.
