We are a Title I school which designates that most of our kids are from low income households. Our school offers free breakfast, lunch and after-school programs. Parents are not required to buy school supplies. Most of the students come from broken or troubled homes. I often hear that the reason they were unable do their homework was because they had to take care of their younger sibling(s) or they were late to school because Mom wouldn't wake up. Most students do not get any assistance at home with school work nor do they have any books for leisure reading. My students need the support and practice of reading in the classroom (especially low readers) because most likely this is the only time they have a chance to read. Students should have an opportunity to escape into a book and I would like to be able to offer them a wonderful and varied library of books.
