My third-grade students face many challenges each day. More than 90 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The majority of our families are Hispanic, with many families employed by the surrounding agricultural community. Many of our students would be the first in their families to attend college. Families struggle to help their students with reading, because, for many, English is not their first language, or even a second.
