My students are eager to learn and excited about learning. However, several of them have a hard time staying seated during class. They prefer to stand instead, saying that they can think and work better this way. It also gives them a chance to move their bodies (swaying from side to side, shaking their legs, etc). While this provides them with much-needed relief from sitting at their desks, it is very difficult for growing fifth and sixth graders to stoop over their desks to complete written assignments. So they end up kneeling on the hard tile floor. Our school is relatively small and located in a rural neighborhood. Our school mission is to provide a safe, nurturing environment so students will reach their fullest potential and become responsible, participating members of society.
