The 8th grade Earth Science students have participated in the SITE (Students Investigate Today’s Environment) program for the state over the past eight years. The SITE program engages students across the State in projects involving scientific inquiry into water quality, noxious weeds, and other real-world concerns. The students monitor the water at the lake in near our town, for the fall and spring of each school year. The students are responsible for administering water tests such as pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphates, nitrates, and turbidity at the designated water site. The students also administer a variety of soil tests, testing the soil for pH, potassium, nitrates, and phosphates. The students are responsible for gathering the data and calculating the water quality index (WQI). Once the water data has been collected, the information is then entered on the website for the state monitor the water ways.
