I currently teach and learn with 117 wonderful students in Lit Comp 1. The majority of my students are in the 9th grade, just beginning their high school careers. All of my classes are richly diverse and heterogeneous in terms of language, SES, race, and educational background (in 2013 our school served 65% FRL, 12% EL, but has grown increasingly diverse since). Students have the opportunity to work and learn with others who have had vastly different life experiences from their own, and who have different strengths and challenges. Language arts offers a ripe opportunity for students to share themselves, their experiences, and their strengths, helping one another grow and broadening each others' understanding of the world. My students are involved in myriad activities outside my classroom as well. Many are student athletes, participate in band, or other clubs. Many more have jobs or little siblings who they care for after school. They are wonderfully varied and talented people!
