My first graders surprise me every single day. Their love of learning is inspirational. They are always asking for another assignment to do, turning in their homework without fail, and asking a million questions about everything we learn. Our class has an exceptional attendance record; most days we boast 100%. My first graders love writing, drawing, coloring, cutting, reading, building, playing--anything they can do with their hands. In addition to my first graders' hands-on creativity, they live out our class pledge of respect every day. "In first grade we respect our classroom, adults, each other, and ourselves." My first graders are already holding each other accountable for this: if someone is sharing an idea with the class and the whole class isn't paying attention, my first graders ask, "Can I get everyone's attention? I don't feel respected yet." That's just one snapshot of the amazing things my first graders are doing just 3 months into school.
