As students grow and develop in their understanding of books, they will be able to use these books to try and remember the story, match their words to the pictures, talk like the character, and retell what is happening. Retelling is an important strategy to help with comprehension and help develop important preschool language skills, especially using complete sentences and using descriptive words. Studies have shown that children living in poverty often enter kindergarten with thousands of fewer words in their vocabulary, which automatically puts them at a deficit. Our preschool program helps to bridge this gap by providing language rich literacy experiences. Having actual copies of books for the students to hold and look at during instruction will help them grow and develop the vocabulary they need to be successful in K5.
