The students at our elementary school face a variety of risk factors. Over 97% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, indicating that our students are largely living in poverty. The neighborhood in which our school is located has a disproportionate amount of gang-activity, arrests, substance abuse, and other risk factors compared to the rest of our city (Denver). Many of our children lack positive male role models due to incarceration, immigration issues, or other complicating factors. Despite these risk factors, I find our students to be friendly, largely respectful, motivated, and hardworking. Despite the challenges that our school and families face, our school has been rated as a Center For Excellence by the Colorado Department of Education. I can honestly say that I love my job and the students and families that our school serves.
