We already have a large classroom library, and students choose independent reading books for pleasure and to respond to in their journals. However, there is a sense of community that comes with digging into the deep study of a whole-class novel together. This is work that builds readers and writers. Laurie Halse-Anderson's novel, Fever 1793, is both well-researched and well-crafted: a rare double-whammy of a book that will bring the opportunity for both literary and historical insight to our classroom. Having a class set of this recently published novel, by an author whose books my students often choose to read on their own time, will only increase engagement.
