Nearly one year ago in March 2020, faced with a global pandemic, schools across the nation closed their doors. Students in my district have not seen the inside of a classroom since. As public health metrics improve, however, we have plans to return to in person learning in April 2021. A key consideration for a successful return to in-person instruction is the educational technology necessary to engage all students in learning activities. Upon reopening, our school will implement a hybrid model in which educators teach students concurrently in-person and online. The implementation of learning activities to all students in such a learning structure will require each classroom have certain technology, including a computer, webcam, bluetooth headset, second monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and a projection tool. To reduce the amount of movement throughout the school, teachers will not have designated classroom space, but rather will rotate while students remain in place. The student pod impacted by this proposal consists of 109 students across 4 general education class (Mathematics, Science, World Cultures, and RELA) with 4 teachers. Our goal is to equip all four classrooms with exactly the same technology tools to ensure smooth transitions and minimize lost instructional time. We are in need of 4 monitors and cables that will remain at the teacher work stations in each classroom and 4 wireless keyboard/mouse combos that will be assigned to each of the 4 teachers for individual use. A second screen in all classrooms will enable each teacher to facilitate concurrent learning activities while monitoring student engagement for all students in-person and online. The keyboard/mouse combos provide an ergonomic setup to allow for ease of use and enhanced comfort. Despite the challenges in distance learning, we have persevered. With the right tools, our students can excel in a hybrid model as well.
