Can you name a book that has changed your life? Or more likely, would it be difficult to only choose one? Reading, more than any other skill, has the ability to profoundly impact a student's life and future, but unfortunately, many students are never given the support and resources necessary for nurturing a passion and ability for reading. Beginning with the 2019-20 school year, LHS English department is re-imagining our curriculum across all grade levels to focus on nurturing in our students the passion and ability to become lifelong active readers. Following the example of various teacher-researchers, including Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle, our curriculum will focus on building students identity as readers by giving them agency over what they read. The traditional approach of the teacher-directed reading of the pre-chosen "classics" drives students away. Our approach will be to give students choice in almost everything they read by exposing them to a variety of titles and supporting them in finding and engaging with books that speak to them, both for independent reading and book club choices. In order to do that we have to dramatically expand our existing classroom libraries.
