I teach 9th graders Biology and 11th and 12th graders Environmental Science. The majority of these students read below grade level. Remarkably below grade level. Both of the books that I have selected have people in them that started off in the same shoes as my students, especially the males. Half of our school is on free and reduced lunch. If we can get them to read something that they can relate to, we are helping to broaden their horizons. First of all, we are getting them to read. Secondly, we are exposing them to the field of science which could in turn influence them to pick the field of science to study in college or at least get them to want higher education for themselves because they have read about someone else that has done it and has come from where they come from.
