My classroom library was hit hard during 2019 and 2020 because of remote learning. Students would check out books to read for pleasure and then be sent home because of Covid-19. These books were never returned. Over time, the selection for my students has decreased dramatically. Because I teach struggling readers, the timeline for the school library doesn't often work for them causing books to have to be returned before completion or late fines which my students can't afford. Having a variety of books available to my students in my classroom provides the opportunity they need to select the books best suited for their abilities and interests. We use the books to develop practice the phonetic reading skills they've learned in class and promote a love of reading.
