My students are curious, honest, and determined. My first graders don't hold back in anything they do. Navigating through life can be difficult as they deal with poverty and grow up in a city where their school is not equitably funded and their voices are often silenced. I want, as an educator, to be able to amplify my students' already strong voices. My students' socioeconomic status should not hold them back from all they want to accomplish. The student body population is ninety-eight percent African-American and ninety-six percent low-income. Chicago Public Schools have been plagued with inappropriate funding and budget cuts, leaving schools without the resources they need. Despite this, students come everyday, eager to learn and teachers come everyday, eager to teach.
