The wide range of diverse books I've selected for our classroom include topics that will educate students on inventors, community service leaders (ones who we don't typically learn about), entertainers, and topics that are relevant to cultural and social diversity. Students seeing themselves and people who look like them or have similar backgrounds is two-fold because not only do they learn about the topics, but also gain an important sense of self and self worth when they see themselves positively represented in print. I want to encourage my students as readers, writers, and learners to know that they have value, as well as their stories and experiences. I want to continue to create a classroom community that has a diverse interwoven fabric where students may see that we are all one people, yet at the same time, celebrate our diversity.
