With these materials, I hope to create functional lessons and models for my students with the highest communication needs. These students have limited verbal output and thus use augmentative and alternative communication (PECS, sign language, or a voice output device) to communicate their basic wants and needs. As a part of their program, these students go on functional outings to practice basic skills like ordering food at a fast food restaurant or buying groceries at a local grocery store. Though these seem like second nature to us, to these students, it is a new adventure, exploring and interacting with the community. These adaptive books will be created and used to help prepare students for social interactions in the community. The books may include examples of who and what is found in the community and scripts on how to communicate in specific scenarios (i.e., how to order lunch at the deli). All books will be created specific to the student and their activities. The lamination and binding will provide durability as the students will be encouraged to take the books home to practice with their family. Because most of the students are visual learners, the iPad will be a great tool to for video modeling. Students can practice specific social scenarios, like ordering lunch, and then analyze their performance immediately after. Records on the video will also allow the students to visually see their progress in communication throughout the year. In addition to this, because many of the students are just starting to learn to use their communication devices, the iPad will be a good tool for teachers and staff to model appropriate communication using an augmentative and alternative communication device.
