I teach 3rd grade in a Title 1 school where reading on grade level is a struggle with our boys. In my classroom, I've noticed a pattern over the last 3 years. My girls in general, focus in any situation and my boys struggle with sitting for extended periods of time, tap on the desk, constantly move and sometimes sit on one foot. They lose focus which causes them to miss important information. Recent brain research validates differences in the learning needs of boys versus girls. Third grade is a very difficult year. They transition into becoming more independent learners. There are learning gaps. Focus is imperative. The girls seem to transition well but the boys seem to struggle. I've read several articles on the effectiveness of exercise balls and bean bag chairs in the classroom. I have 2 balls in my room and I can see a difference when I allow them to sit on the balls and work. The girls use them also. My class has more boys than girls. This would allow more boys to bounce!
