My middle school students are eager to learn, but because most of them enter sixth grade at a major deficit in their reading skills, they are easily frustrated and discouraged. Reading levels range from emergent to fluent, affecting all subjects in which reading is a prerequisite. If students have access books that are appealing to them, they are far more likely to read. Lack of confidence greatly affects students’ ability to read independently, which is why they need books of interest that will foster a love for reading and significantly improve their level of proficiency. In order to develop strong readers, we need high interest, low readability books. Supplying our classroom library with these items will ensure that all students have a friendly environment with tools for success. As we read The Leader in Me by Stephen Covey, students get yet another chance at proving their leadership skills by beginning with the end in Mind and being proactive. Empowering our readers today will develop confident leaders of tomorrow! I am requesting several book titles that will appeal to my middle school students. The characters in these new books are vibrant, dynamic, and thoroughly interesting to my middle schoolers. I have carefully chosen books that would serve as a good match for students in my classroom. I took into consideration reading levels and topics of interest when selecting books. One of the big challenges is teaching grade level content, aligned to the Common Core Standards to students below grade level. My students will develop the ability to use evidence to support their claims. In order to practice this skill in reading, students need to have books that make them think, question, and wonder. These materials will help my students to make a lifelong connection to reading.
