I am interested in pursuing a project for my 3rd-5th graders focused on sculpture typified by forms found in nature such as animals and plants. Indigenous cultures like African, South American, Inuit, Easter Island, and Aboriginal, for example, base their artwork on nature. Often their spirituality/religion is also nature based. Additionally, carving is a skill that I am hoping to expose my students to, as many of them don't have the opportunity to learn this skill first hand. We will usually do additive sculpture using clay, but subtractive sculpture where the material is carved away is a very different process. This will give my students a small taste of the carving process which is used world wide in indigenous cultures to form both functional and decorative art forms.
