My students are all from a city where the unemployment rate is still hovering around 10% and all students in our district receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Most of my students will be the first in their family to attend college, and are striving to better themselves everyday. Our student population is comprised of mostly minority students who are just trying to find a way to improve their lives. Our school district has had a zero increase budget for the last six years. Opportunities for my students to participate in activities and showcase their talents are difficult due to a lack of appropriate funding. Our robotics team has offered an opportunity for these kids to show off their skills and talents at the national level. Our team two years ago advanced to the FIRST robotics national championships in St. Louis.
