My first grade lovely students are literally hungry for life. For most of them, their primary concern is to take their apple from breakfast back home. My primary concern is to feed their intellectual appetite so one day they can choose their own apple to bite and feel proud of it. In the morning assembly, the principal shakes their hands and thank them for their everyday effort. Teachers remind them how lucky they are to speak two languages and learn from two cultures (Hispanic and American). My students are humble kids who feel the entire school cares for them because the truth is that it is often the only place where the feel safe and happy. The entire neighborhood began in a previous oil boom, expanded and declined with each subsequent boom and bust. Two-thirds of the housing units are mobile homes. Furthermore, the community has two serious problems-poor soil and water. All in all, this 60-year old school with a very tight budget is all my students can call home for most of the day.
