I would like to purchase a diverse variety of puppets to use during our morning news show, around the school for classroom visits, and during guidance and small group lessons. Because we have such a diverse population I want to be able to use a variety of puppets so students can see a representation of themselves.
These puppets would be used to introduce a weekly problem/issue during the morning news show. The students would then have the opportunity to help solve the problem by writing a letter (or drawing a picture) to the puppet, telling him/her the best way to solve the problem using the strategies they have learned in guidance. Each week some of the letters will be read on the news show and posted in the hall for all to see. A parent letter will also go home each week so families have the opportunity to discuss the problem, encouraging parents to get involved as well. Each student that participates will be entered into a weekly drawing where they have a chance to win a small prize.
The development of problem-solving skills is an important building block for success. Learning self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills gives students strategies to be successful in school, work, and life.
