In my classroom, I have a nutritionist that comes out every other month and gives my students an important lesson on nutrition and staying active. She also brings a sample tasting for my students so that they can try new foods that most of the children have never heard of, much less tasted. She gives the lesson and later we talk about and review her lesson throughout the week and months until she returns for another lesson.
With the kitchen and healthy play food we have requested, my students will then be able to practice shopping and cooking these healthy foods that they have learned about. It puts the ideas into a play setting that is fun and engaging. It helps students learn social skills while sharing and creating meals with a friend.
Students can also take these healthy choices they have learned about and share these ideas and experiences with their parents. This not only helps promote healthy eating, but it fosters conversations between students and their parents. It helps get the parents involved in their child's education and what they are learning.
