I teach twenty-eight curious, insightful third-graders, all of whom love technology. We spend our days in a public-school classroom in Brooklyn and although we have access to a wealth of resources, technology is not one of them. During my three years of teaching at my current school, I've done the best I can to expose my students to technology: I use programs like Google Maps and PowerPoint to deliver content; we watch videos about Brazil, Africa, and geometry; we build grammar, spelling, and math skills using online games. However, all of these activities are done in whole-class settings via one laptop and an VGA cable/projector. Students rarely get to engage with technology in small groups or independently and, due to budget cuts, third-graders only have a weekly media-technology class for half the year.
