I remember the first time I saw a light table in our STEM classroom, I was mesmerized by the soft glow and the reflecting colors. There was something about it that I found so soothing. You may think a light table is just for science exploration and discovery, but there’s so much more to it than that. A light table is a translucent, flat surface, such as a tabletop- with a light source underneath, the light shines up towards the top of the table. It can be used to enhance literacy, math, and writing skills in fun and playful ways. Sensory play is one of the best ways to aid in the development of your child. Engaging a child in sensory play helps strengthen their brain development for learning, which enhances their memory and ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Light and darkness hold fascination and intrigue, as well as an element of risk and challenge and of being scared. Exploring light and shadow enables children to appreciate the awe and wonder of the world around them and provides an environment where children can develop their natural curiosity. Light panels can be used to help develop an awareness of light, color, and objects. It can also be used as a tool to assist with visual tracking, visual scanning, hand-eye coordination, visual discrimination, and visual perceptual skills. This helps peak students interest in learning rather than using the traditional methods of teaching. If a student is interested and excited about learning, then learning will happen. The possibilities are endless! Therefore, learning is endless!
