I am requesting a small collection of Playaways, along with the matching books, as well as a collection of high interest Graphic Novels. They will be available to all students via the Library checkout system. Students will be able to check them out for a load period of 14 days, just as they would a regular Library book. The students will be able to take the Playaway home and listen to/read the books that are pre-loaded onto the device. They can read the book multiple times, thus building fluency. After the student has read/listened to the book, they would be allowed to take their Accelerated Reader Test. The rational for selecting the Playaways versus the traditional audio books is that the audio speed can be adjusted (slowed down or sped up) by the individual student. An emergent reader can slow down the speed of the audio, whereas one working on building reading fluency can speed up the audio each time they read/listen to it. The audio is pre-loaded onto the Playaway device, so there is no need for a CD player or CDs. The students just need a pair of ear buds to listen and follow along. On another note, Playaways and Graphic Novels are a much less intimidating choice for the student who is a reluctant reader. These books are high interest and accommodate students with reading difficulties.
