This project is important because my girls need a chance! We are in a small school where our experience is college focused and girl centered. However, we lack the materials and time for students to be able to experience athletics and fitness ultimately increasing unhealthy habits and childhood obesity. We have created spaces and small windows for our girls to experience activities that involve movement and kinesthetic learning after school however, offering sports has presented a challenge. In order to accommodate basketball in a gym without quality equipment, we often are forced to borrow spaces from other schools or teachers and coaches are burdened to cover the cost of gym rentals. Even with inadequate space, our girls have demonstrated commitment!. We have over 80 girls committed to athletics and 20 of which who play basketball, working tirelessly to win on and off the court. The team has worked hard to earn an average GPA of 3.1 and leads the city in league play with a record of 7-1. We are working hard to promote the idea that women can do it all, including play basketball, but we must have the "hoops" to do it. We need two glass backboard basketball goals.
My girls are multifaceted, leading on and off the court; they just need the "hoop" to reach the Goal! We want to offer our girls multiple ways to stay engaged in school but we also want to win. We have taken girls who have never touched a basketball and coached them to a point where they now identify as student-athletes that use basketball as an outlet and a source of inspiration. They are committed to staying on the right track in order to compete in college and beyond. They deserve to have quality equipment that they can be proud of and use reach their dreams!
