Maya Angelou, the great and inspirational poet, once said, "If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young." This is what I hope to do with my students. They are young and so interested in the world around them. Their daily lives are impacted by so many issues beyond their control, and I want to introduce them to books that explore such issues through the eyes of characters who they can connect with. These issues are related to social justice, for many of my students are impoverished and feel invisible, voiceless, and left out of mainstream society. Literature is one of the great equalizers where these students who come from different ethnic groups and communities, and have different values and beliefs can grapple with these challenging and complex issues together.
