My kindergarten students are from Florida and live in high poverty homes. These students are academically, socially, and emotionally needy. Many of them have never attended VPK and some do not know how to hold a pencil. Many of them have never had access to books. Once a book is placed in his/her hands and I teach the class that reading is more then reading words they devour books. They can't get enough of them. They smile, laugh, share thinking, and my rooms hums with meaningful reading and conversations about books. I do have a few students who attended Pre-K and require high interest books to read and practice reading strategies with. Our school is high poverty and we do not have money available for classrooms from the PTA or parents.
