Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is an approach to teaching mathematics that uses students’ own mathematical thinking, through questioning techniques, as the foundation for instruction. The teacher’s role is to build upon students’ prior knowledge so that they may make connections between situational experiences and the abstract mathematical symbols. By supporting this project, students in my class will have the opportunity to explore mathematics in a whole new way. They will take their own knowledge, plus the use of Unifix cubes to figure out mathematical problems from the simple addition and subtraction to the more complex world of multiplication, division, and fractions through the use of words problems. This way of exploring math is not only hands on, it is exciting, and self guided. The beauty is there is a correct answer, but there is no right or wrong approach to figuring out the answer. The students do all the work and switch roles and become the teachers of the class during this process. It helps to build each student's confidence, literacy, public speaking, critical thinking, and problem solving skills all in one lesson.
