Students will be able to create buttons and posters that will celebrate diversity and build a community. Each ethnic group within the high school community at large will be represented and celebrated. A different ethnicity will be highlighted every six weeks; Latinos, African Americans, American Indians, and Asian Americans. Additionally, gender themes and LGBTQIA persons will be included. The main themes will include social justice, responsibility, and being an agent of change. During the six week period, students will have the opportunity to design templates, create buttons, and posters for display in the library. The button machine will allow students to internalize the message of either the book and create art they can wear on their school ID lanyard. This project will simultaneously symbolize themes of social justice while advertising as a movable art exhibit. Students love to be creative and make things, especially when it is a free choice. After each highlighted theme students will have the opportunity to create buttons and posters of their choice.
