I teach a variety of English classes from Sheltered to Pre-AP. My class population is as diverse as I would like the reading selections I provide for them to be. My classroom consists of many interests and reading levels from the girl with a collegiate vocabulary who always has a vampire book in her hands, to the boy who snags my sports magazines to read at home, to the ELL student who tries to finish reading a book about the Ramones but needs a Spanish/English dictionary for every few words. The school has high percentages of children from low-income families and has condensed the library space to make room for more classrooms as the student population grows every year yet space remains limited. The freshman class is the largest class but is the least comfortable and spirited; whereas, the senior class is the smallest but consists of motivated students who feel comfortable at school. More engaging materials and meaningful projects would help with student retention and school spirit.
