I tell my students that we read to learn more about ourselves and to learn more about the world. Mirror stories, to help them build their identities, and window stories, to help them gain a deeper understanding of the wider world, are the foundation of our classroom library. Books like All American Boys will help my students tackle difficult issues that they face today. Books like Every Last Word will help my students learn to see beyond the outside and into a person. This project will provide choice and opportunity for my students to come to a deeper understanding of their own identities and to develop an empathetic approach to viewing the world at large.
