I teach at a Title I school in Clark County Las Vegas where students are raised by single parent and migrant workers. Being the older siblings, some play the role the of parent in the home.My traditional fourth grade class consists of fourteen boys and ten girls, with a variety of challenges in reading and writing. Their reading levels ranges from 1.2 to 3.0 which classifies them as low performing students on the State Exam. With the determination and the hunger to become the best that can be, these students have a flexible mindset to overcome their barriers. They are also enthusiastic learners however, they lack the necessary learning tools to become effective learners. Due to the low socio -economic environment students live in, they need all the help that they can get. Every day that students walk into the school cafe they are given a free breakfast and lunch and some even a Friday Bag to take home for the weekend.
