We have the most diverse population of middle school students in the district, our students come from more than 30 different countries. Most of the students or their parents were not born in the United States, but that does not temper their love of reading. They have truly embraced American culture and come in looking for books on Batman, Spider-man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Bone, and many other popular titles. One unique quality of graphic novels is that they allow students whose primary language is not English the ability to enjoy the books, while not being singled out because of their language skills. The graphics in the books offer comprehension clues to the text and fewer words allow for mastery of vocabulary at a pace that is not to daunting to English language learners.
