Simply put, my students are amazing! I'm a 2nd and 3rd grade special education teacher and I work with students who face great academic challenges daily. Reading and writing are difficult for all of the students who I work with, and most are performing two or more years below grade level. Most come from low-income families as my school is located in a low-income neighborhood in Chicago. As a result, the challenges my students face extend far beyond the classroom. Because my students struggle so much academically, we require additional classroom materials in order to raise student achievement. When it comes to classroom materials, I pay for most supplies out of pocket, including supplies as necessary as copy paper. For me, that expense it worth the reward of seeing my students achieve things they never thought possible. What I find amazing is that these students WANT to learn, and they work harder than any other students I've seen before despite the obstacles they face.
