The truth is some of my students have always struggled to read and write. Many of them have never traveled outside their hometown, most come from economically challenged households and very few were read to as children. Making connections between their lives and the texts we come across is difficult at times because they don't always relate, which makes reading insignificant. Providing the opportunity to read literature they connect to, fosters an enriched literacy environment. One day I decided to read "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss. When I was done, one of my students yelled, "Please read to us again! My parents never read to me." I teach 9th graders by the way, yet, they all sat in silence, fascinated as I read aloud. By far, it has been one of the most magical moments I have ever experienced as a teacher. The response I got was so positive that I committed to reading a children's book every Friday. Never underestimate the power of children's books, they might just inspire students to read!
