Beyond being used for comfort, a classroom rug can teach students many things including spatial awareness and about shared space. In younger grades, these kinds of basic everyday skills are a necessity that can be easily developed through the use of a classroom rug. Additionally, the chosen rug can be used to reinforce knowledge of colors and basic music symbols. More importantly in my classroom, having a classroom rug will bring students together to create a safe and accepting musical community. Many activities we do as a class involve sitting in circles or doing circle dances, which can be easily formed on and around a classroom rug. During these "around the rug" activities, students will experience social interactions and appropriate behaviors while learning fun and interesting songs and dances of all types.
