My students are first and second graders in a 12:1:1 special education class, that is located in the Bronx. They are in smaller setting so they can receive more individualized instruction. Too many students can be overwhelming which can distract them and they are unable to focus or maintain self-control. A smaller setting sometimes help to maintain this behavior. Many of these students outside of school are not exposed to the essentials of being a successful student and when this is required of them in school some cannot adapt to this. As the teacher I try to make my classroom a home away from home so they can feel comfortable and confident enough to become successful students and an independent workers.
