We are fortunate to have a diverse group of students with a wide variety and range in strengths and abilities. Along with these great strengths comes a variety of different sensory needs that need to be met in order for the students to learn. All it requires to begin running a sensory smart classroom is a willingness to look at the classroom and its routine through the lens of a child’s sensory needs, and the creativity and motivation to try to do something just a little bit differently. Many sensory needs can be addressed with little to no equipment however, some activities require special equipment. Some of these supports work for students who are distracted easily such as access to the a bin of various fidgets, and access to noise canceling headphones (if it helps the child focus, etc. as desired by the child). In between each academic subject time is dedicated to allow a movement break where students can access the various sensory materials in the room as well as engage in a group movement activity.
