Easy access to books within my 6th grade ELA and Literature classroom and creating a culture of reading with my 6th grade students is of highest priority. Enjoying and connecting with books together builds classroom community! It is my philosophy that students should be surrounded by books of all kinds and be given the opportunity to choose books that interest them. Reading aloud picture books to my class is another way to use literature. I use picture books as mentor texts for modeling writing, to foster deeper discussions, teach reading strategies and approach social/emotional issues.
