My school is located on the south side of Atlanta. It is a Title 1 school; therefore the majority of the students come from impoverished homes. Though my students are in the eighth grade, most of them score 3-5 grades below grade level in reading and writing. Many of my students lack educational support within the home simply because their parents are also struggling learners. My students have been behind so long and have failed so often, that they seem to have lost the desire to try. I have students that are already 16 and still in middle school. I am afraid that if they don’t experience success in school soon, they will give up. I don't want my students to give up on school as so many others in their community have already done. I know that with the right resources and support my students can learn even though the odds have been against them.
