Starting in January, I moved to a paperless classroom. All assignments and materials are created or imported into an online classroom management system. We use this daily for Bell-work, assignments, reading, taking notes, and even quizzes and tests. It has been a fun and awesome endeavor that the kids greatly enjoy. There is, however, one slight hang-up. While the majority of students have their own devices on a regular basis, there are several reasons why having devices on hand to borrow is a necessity. Some of my kids don’t have their own and therefore have to do their work the “old fashioned way” while the rest use the online system, parents use device confiscation as a consequence, and sometimes a student may lose their device to another teacher before reaching my class. All of these make staying paperless a challenge. If a had enough extra devices, students could borrow them for the period and everyone would be back on a level playing field, no matter their deviceless reason. I am asking for the Amazon Fires because they are WiFi enabled and can use the school’s WiFi, while being cost efficient, the cases to protect them for (hopefully!) years to come, and a charging station to keep them juiced up during the day.
