It is my responsibility to create a calming, sensory pleasing environment that encourages learning and simultaneously includes our students in general education classes. As a support teacher, I am able to provide a space within or outside of the classroom to allow students to complete work. Both special needs students and general education students will benefit from having a quite comfortable place to work. If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn- Ignacio Estrada. This project will create a space where frustration can be expelled physically by boxing or walking in the sensory garden. A quite cushioned area in the classroom will also provide a way for students who need minimal stimulation a place to complete tasks or small group work. For example, when our students start be become stressed-out or angry due to a challenging assignment, they will have a choice to take a time-away in a quite space, box it out or walk in the sensory garden with relaxing music. At times, our student will need snacks available to soothe their stomachs when taking medication. It is hard to learn when you are not feeling well. Including our students in general education classes seems to boost their self esteem almost immediately. I really want my students to feel good, work hard and like school. We highlight students strengths and like to find ways for them to feel success in their classwork by accommodating and/or modifying their assignments. Concentrating on individuals not their disability has been effective for us. Your support will provide the supplies and tools needed to effectively work with our students.
