An outdoor eating area allows students a much needed break from the classroom. Research shows providing students with down time allows them to process and retain information. Providing social time allows students a chance to make connections with peers and develop social skills. An outdoor space is vital for teaching third grade science content. We explore soil and growth cycles of plants. These activities are much more suited for the outdoors. These tables will also be utilized by the STEM teacher, allowing students a chance to make a mess while exploring the concepts of math, science, engineering, and technology. As we do not currently have furniture outside, these much needed tables will provide an outside classroom environment for the whole school.
