I teach special education students who work daily to improve their academic skills as well as their emotional and behavioral skills. If students struggle to manage their emotions and behaviors, internal and external, then they struggle to focus on their academics as well. Self-regulation is a key component in managing emotions and behaviors. There are a variety of sensory items that students can use as tools while working on self-regulation. Stress balls, putty, and fidgets can be used while focusing on breathing techniques in order to help calm down. Within this project there are various items that students will use at tools while deescalating and self-regulating. Time can be an abstract concept and can cause students frustration if they do not understand how much time has past or how much time is left. Visual timers help students, allowing them to watch the time decrease. Putty is another tool that students can use. There are different levels of difficulty with each putty, which requires the students to use various levels of strength to mold and work the putty. Items can also be placed in the putty such as beads which the students can remove using their fingers. This skill focuses on fine motor and helps to distract the students, giving them something else to focus on. While working on breathing techniques, students can use the ball reflex. They can squeeze the ball - breathing in when they squeeze and breathing out when they release. They can also roll the ball up and down their arm while focusing on the same breathing techniques. The donations made to fund this project will help supply tools to the students in order to make a larger impact on their emotional / behavioral development.
