My students are a complex mixture of cultures, ethnicity, beliefs, and identities. And as freshmen, they enter my class with both an eagerness and a reluctance to share their identities. Ultimately, though, they bring their unique perspectives and life experiences and are becoming more willing to share these parts of their lives as the year progresses. Our school is one of the most diverse schools in the nation with a very high population of immigrants and refugees entering throughout the school year. Because of this, the students are often teaching the teacher just as much as we teach them because their lives are so unique. Often literature is what brings us together and allows us to find common ground as it examines themes that are universal to all.
